Turning Adversity Into a Superpower: What I Learned From Jim Curtis

Last month in New York, I had the opportunity to meet Jim Curtis, and his message left a lasting impression on me.

In a room full of entrepreneurs, leaders, and changemakers, Jim wasn't focused on achievements, titles, or success stories. Instead, he spoke about something much more powerful: transformation.

For more than two decades, Jim lived with a debilitating and often undiagnosed health condition that affected his spinal cord and dramatically changed the course of his life. What could have become a story of limitation became a story of reinvention. Rather than allowing his condition to define him, Jim chose to use his experience as a catalyst for growth, healing, and purpose.

Today, he is known as a transformational coach, author, speaker, and wellness advocate who helps others overcome emotional and physical challenges. His work is built on a simple but profound belief: our greatest struggles often contain the seeds of our greatest strengths.

What struck me most was not his story alone, but his intention.

Jim wanted to empower the room.

He encouraged people to stop seeing adversity as something that happens to them and start seeing it as something that can happen for them. His message reminded everyone present that resilience is not about avoiding challenges—it's about finding meaning through them.

As entrepreneurs, we all face moments of uncertainty, setbacks, and obstacles that seem impossible to overcome. Listening to Jim speak was a powerful reminder that our challenges do not define us. Our response to them does.

His journey resonated deeply with me. Having faced my own health challenges and personal losses, I understand how difficult experiences can shape our purpose. Like Jim, I believe that pain can become a source of strength and that our greatest impact often comes from the lessons we learn through adversity.

Jim Curtis transformed a disability and years of struggle into a superpower—one that now helps thousands of people live healthier, more intentional lives.

And perhaps that was his greatest lesson of all: sometimes the very thing we wish had never happened becomes the reason we are able to help others.
