She spent years researching, formulating, and testing. The goal was simple: a deodorant that targets the root cause of odor without blocking your body's natural detox process — and works just as well as anything you'd find at the drugstore.

Founder and CEO Zuly Matallana has dedicated her life to education, wellness, sustainability, and empowering consumers through knowledge. Her journey has been defined by perseverance, innovation, and a desire to create products that make a meaningful impact on people and the planet.

Education Creates Change

Born in Colombia and trained as a journalist, Zuly began her career serving communities through education and social programs. Her work taught her the power of communication, knowledge, and community service.

Her passion for sustainability was sparked through the Yo Limpio a Puerto Rico (I Clean Puerto Rico) campaign, where she taught children and communities about recycling and environmental responsibility. It reinforced a belief that still guides her today: informed people can change habits, influence families, and protect the planet for future generations.

A Life-Changing Recovery

Shortly after graduating from university, Zuly underwent brain surgery. Serious complications temporarily took away her ability to walk and affected her senses of smell and taste. Through faith, determination, and perseverance, she fought her way back and learned to walk again.

That experience transformed her outlook on life. It deepened her appreciation for health, strengthened her commitment to helping others, and reinforced her belief that every day is an opportunity to create positive change. After recovering, Zuly dedicated herself to serving others and making a meaningful impact in her community.

A New Chapter

Building a New Life in Canada

After concerns for her safety arose from her community work in Colombia, Zuly made the courageous decision to begin a new chapter in Canada. Arriving without an established network, she rebuilt her life from the ground up, and was inspired to write an e-book to help newcomers navigate the challenges of settling into a new country.

Over the years, she built a successful career in technology, banking, consulting, and international business development, including roles with Scotiabank and PwC.

The TIARA Shower Cap is designed to last for years, helping prevent an estimated 20 million disposable shower caps from entering landfills. Likewise, TIARA Natural Deodorants are designed with longevity in mind. While many deodorants last only a few months, a single TIARA deodorant can last up to six months, helping reduce container disposal and packaging waste by up to 67%.

At TIARA, we measure our impact through three key pillars: waste reduction, product longevity, and consumer education. By creating products that last longer, generate less waste, and empower families to make informed choices, TIARA is helping build a healthier future for people and the planet.

The Birth of TIARA

The inspiration for TIARA came from a simple everyday challenge. As a woman with curly hair, Zuly struggled to find a shower cap that was comfortable, functional, and durable. After interviewing nearly 500 women, she discovered that many shared the same frustrations.

Using their feedback, she developed a larger, reusable, and more comfortable shower cap designed to protect hairstyles without leaking, pinching, or leaving marks. The result was the patented TIARA Shower Cap: an innovative, reversible, machine-washable design created to last for years rather than days.

Zuly's entrepreneurial journey reached a national audience when she pitched TIARA on Dragons' Den. Her innovative shower cap secured a deal with Manjit Minhas and Jim Treliving, bringing national recognition to the brand and validating her belief that sustainability and innovation can go hand in hand.

The appearance transformed TIARA from a startup into a nationally recognized Canadian success story.

After losing her grandmother Alicia and aunt Ruth to breast cancer, Zuly became deeply interested in ingredient transparency and the personal care products families use every day. Using her investigative skills as a journalist, she spent years researching ingredients and developing a natural deodorant that met her standards for effectiveness, transparency, comfort, and sustainability.

Her mission was simple: create a natural deodorant that simply works.
